We made Protect free because many features included in paid privacy subscriptions are becoming commodities. Consumers should not have to keep paying for standardized privacy tools that can be made broadly accessible.
Some paid privacy services provide real value. Data broker removal and basic breach monitoring, however, increasingly represent the foundation of online privacy protection, not a premium product.

Combining them under one Reklaim account better reflects what we set out to build: a platform where consumers control what happens to their personal information.
Most companies in this market sit on one side of the equation. Rewards companies help consumers earn from their data but don't help protect it. Privacy companies help consumers monitor or remove their information but provide no way to participate in the data economy on their own terms.
Reklaim does both, and will increasingly do more.
Our goal is for Reklaim to become the brand synonymous with consumers and their data, not simply rewards or privacy, but everything related to consumer data.
Why Data Broker Removal Is Changing
Historically, removing personal information meant finding each data broker, locating its opt-out process, verifying your identity and repeating the exercise across hundreds of websites.
That complexity created a market for paid data broker removal services.
California is now changing that model.
The state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) allows California residents to submit one request directing more than 600 registered data brokers to delete and stop selling their personal information.
DROP currently applies only to California residents. Consumers in other states will still need a removal service, but history gives us a good indication of what happens next. When California introduces something, other states follow. This is what has happened with state-level data broker registries, as well as changes in state-level privacy law.
I expect DROP to follow the same path and faster than most people think.
In my opinion, much of the standalone broker-removal market, the companies charging you +$20 a month will be competed toward zero. The traditional data broker model will face similar pressure as regulation limits how personal information can be collected, sold and retained.
This will take time, but it is already starting to happen. Just don't expect the companies collecting your monthly subscription to tell you that.
Basic Breach Monitoring Is Also Becoming a Commodity
Many breach-monitoring services rely heavily on long-tail data: databases containing breaches that happened months or years ago. They can tell you that your email appeared in a historical breach, but they do not necessarily tell you what was compromised yesterday.
That information is still useful. It is simply no longer scarce.
Many privacy companies rely on the same or similar underlying data sources and APIs for breach detection and broker removal.
The branding may be different. The underlying service often is not.
Reklaim uses some of these same underlying services, which is precisely why I view basic breach monitoring as a commodity rather than a premium product.
Reklaim Provides the Core Privacy Tools for Free
Reklaim Protect gives members much of the core functionality commonly found in paid privacy subscriptions:
- Monitoring for an email address in known data breaches
- Data broker removal requests where available
- Email alerts when something changes
- A monthly privacy summary
Protect is free and optional. Turning it on does not change Rewards or require members to share information they do not want to share.
I think that is pretty good value, but I am biased.
